{"id":2573,"date":"2013-03-22T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-22T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/?p=2573"},"modified":"2014-02-09T15:07:37","modified_gmt":"2014-02-09T20:07:37","slug":"source-material","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/2013\/03\/22\/source-material\/","title":{"rendered":"Source material"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #1c827a;\">The best place to start.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Way back, many Friday Finds ago, I wrote about <a title=\"Journeying\" href=\"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/2012\/08\/31\/journeying\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Writer&#8217;s Journey<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a guide to writers based upon Joseph Campbell&#8217;s study of the monomyth of the Hero&#8217;s Journey.\u00a0 Campbell&#8217;s book is also an excellent one to read.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing beats the source material, however.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, most of us don&#8217;t speak, let alone read, ancient Greek.\u00a0 We have to get our mythology some other way.\u00a0 <em>The Golden Bough<\/em> by Sir James Frazer is a good source.\u00a0 Also, there are several books on mythology by Robert Graves, otherwise famous for the novel <em>I, Claudius<\/em> on which an award-winning TV series starring Derek Jacoby was based.<\/p>\n<p>But, if you are just wondering who Scamander was or looking for a brief refresher on Pandora, you could do worse than consult the <a href=\"http:\/\/pantheon.org\" target=\"_blank\">Encyclopedia Mythica<\/a> at the well-chosen domain of <a href=\"http:\/\/pantheon.org\" target=\"_blank\">pantheon.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not a lot of poetic detail on this website, but the basic facts seem to be present.\u00a0 In addition, it covers not only Greco-Roman mythology, but the stories of the world.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a section on mythical beasts (basilisks, anyone?) and one on the mortal heroes, as well.\u00a0 Achilles to Yoshitsune.<\/p>\n<p>The order is a little capricious.\u00a0 For instance, I don&#8217;t know why Pygmalion shows up in the mythology section rather than the heroes (unless it&#8217;s because Aphrodite was involved in his story), but there&#8217;s a good search function to handle these sort of classification confusions.<\/p>\n<p>So, while I wouldn&#8217;t call this site the source material, it&#8217;s a good place to learn a few things.\u00a0 (I never knew the Aurora Borealis is reflections off the armor of the Valkyries, did you?)\u00a0 And once you&#8217;ve found something that captures your imagination, you can delve further.<\/p>\n<p>You can even go to the ancient Greek if you want:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kypros.org\/LearnGreek\/\" target=\"_blank\">Learn Greek Online!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(The internet is a wonderful place.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The best place to start.
