{"id":2688,"date":"2013-03-28T03:00:10","date_gmt":"2013-03-28T07:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/?p=2688"},"modified":"2013-03-24T09:43:53","modified_gmt":"2013-03-24T13:43:53","slug":"a-taste-of-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/2013\/03\/28\/a-taste-of-home\/","title":{"rendered":"A taste of home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #1c827a;\">Sort of.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Back in NYC, after many, many years of searching, I had found a hairdresser I liked.\u00a0 I always got a good haircut at a reasonable price and, best of all, he was only two blocks away from my apartment!<\/p>\n<p>The proximity is important because I have\u2014I won&#8217;t really call it a phobia\u2014let&#8217;s just say, it&#8217;s a severe dislike\u2014of getting my haircut.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that I mind scissors snipping around me.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just that it seems an awful lot of trouble and money for something that so rarely seems to be an improvement.\u00a0 That, of course, was until I found Joe.<\/p>\n<p>I had tried various other routes.<\/p>\n<p>The Astor Place Barbershop used to be very popular.\u00a0 $8, you take whatever barber is open, and you get what you get.\u00a0 Definitely affordable in my young, starving actor days but not necessarily reliable.<\/p>\n<p>There was a school in the basement of the Empire State Building.\u00a0 Also affordable\u2014but they were &#8220;cutting edge&#8221; (no pun intended), and when you got what you got there, likely as not you got something rather weird which didn&#8217;t match the headshot on which you&#8217;d just spent hundreds of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>There were stylists on the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side who gave cuts of varying degrees of proficiency.\u00a0 The problem with them is similar to a complaint of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_Kerr\" target=\"_blank\">Jean Kerr&#8217;s<\/a> in one of her extremely funny books.\u00a0 If I remember the quote correctly, it was something to the effect that they always acted as if, in another moment, it would have been too late.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t need a hairdresser looking down his or her nose at me.\u00a0 I mean, I&#8217;m sure they do.\u00a0 I just don&#8217;t need to <em>feel<\/em> it every minute I&#8217;m in the shop.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;along came Joe.<\/p>\n<p>I loved having my hair cut by Joe.\u00a0 He was fast and good and friendly.<\/p>\n<p>Moving down here to Florida, I was worried about finding a place to get a good haircut.<\/p>\n<p>How thankful I am that there is a little shop over behind Whitey&#8217;s Fish Camp where Susan of Susan&#8217;s Total Image hangs out!<\/p>\n<p>A friendly welcome and no sense that she thinks she is doing me a favor even to run her comb through my hair.<\/p>\n<p>And walking distance!<\/p>\n<p>Susan and Joe.<\/p>\n<p>My hair and I are thankful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sort of.
