{"id":2833,"date":"2013-05-15T03:00:56","date_gmt":"2013-05-15T07:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/?p=2833"},"modified":"2014-02-09T15:06:58","modified_gmt":"2014-02-09T20:06:58","slug":"putting-the-end-of-the-ham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/2013\/05\/15\/putting-the-end-of-the-ham\/","title":{"rendered":"Putting the end of the ham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #1c827a;\">on your car&#8217;s wheels.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apparently, we&#8217;re all doing it.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a billion dollar business.<\/p>\n<p>(Well, that might be an exaggeration.\u00a0 The truth is I don&#8217;t know the actual figures for the profit in the hubcap industry, but I&#8217;m betting\u2014given the number of cars on the road and the fact that most of them have at least four tires\u2014that it is a significant sector of the economy.)<\/p>\n<p>You may remember, a few weeks ago, a post wherein I was wishing for the Star Trek computer to record a moment by moment account of my life so that I could find the source of used hubcaps we bought some years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Well, along the way to getting that replacement hubcap, I began to wonder why we have hubcaps at all.<\/p>\n<p>I now refer you to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartalk.com\/content\/ever-wonder-do-hubcaps-serve-any-purpose\" target=\"_blank\">Car Talk<\/a> wherein a valiant attempt is made to justify the existence of hubcaps, but it turns out to be mostly like that old story about the end of the ham.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of versions of it floating around.\u00a0 In essence, it goes something like this:<\/p>\n<p>A new husband asked his bride why she was cutting the end off the ham prior to cooking it.<\/p>\n<p>She replied that she didn&#8217;t know.\u00a0 Her mother had always done it that way, so she assumed it was the right thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, when asked, replied the same.\u00a0 <em>Her<\/em> mother had always done it, so she had carried on discarding a portion of the ham prior to cooking.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma was approached.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, she confirmed.\u00a0 She had always cut off the end of the ham.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because, otherwise, it didn&#8217;t fit in her pan.<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, is a cautionary tale about doing things just because they&#8217;ve always been done that way.<\/p>\n<p>And, it turns out, that the <em>raison d&#8217;\u00eatre<\/em> of the hubcap is similar.<\/p>\n<p>Hand-tightened wheel nuts <em>might<\/em>, if they fell off, clang around in a metal hubcap and alert you to a problem before you lost the actual wheel.\u00a0 (Many hubcaps today are plastic, so good luck with that.\u00a0 Plus, most wheel nuts are machine-tightened these days.\u00a0 Good luck with changing that flat yourself, too.)<\/p>\n<p>Hubcaps might help prevent the nuts from rusting to a point where they are too difficult to remove (assuming you&#8217;re going to be able to loosen those machine-tightened things anyway).\u00a0 The <em>Car Talk<\/em> boys point out, however, that wheel rotation and brake inspection generally take care of that in a well-maintained vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves them with the slippery slope argument.\u00a0 The &#8216;for want of a nail&#8217; sort of thing.\u00a0 Missing hubcaps are the first step on a downward spiral where you <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> get the brakes inspected or change the oil.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, however, it sounds like the end of the ham to me.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder on what other things we are spending time and money for some ancient and now irrelevant tradition.\u00a0 I believe I&#8217;ll try to be re-thinking things as I go along.\u00a0 Sort of wondering on more than Wednesdays, so to speak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>on your car&#8217;s wheels.
