{"id":2893,"date":"2013-05-29T03:00:37","date_gmt":"2013-05-29T07:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/?p=2893"},"modified":"2014-02-09T15:05:07","modified_gmt":"2014-02-09T20:05:07","slug":"what-is-it-with-these-dreams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elainesmithwrites.com\/wp\/2013\/05\/29\/what-is-it-with-these-dreams\/","title":{"rendered":"What is it with these dreams?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #2277aa;\">And can we make them stop?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am not a person with a strong belief in the predictive power of dreams.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think they are premonitions or portents.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully.<\/p>\n<p>Because I have been having some very odd ones lately, and I&#8217;d hate to think what they presaged if I gave any credence to that idea.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, I think dreams are sort of a mash-up of images from your waking life.\u00a0 With the exception of the Actor&#8217;s Nightmare\u2014where you can&#8217;t remember what play you are doing or everybody else is speaking lines from a different play or in a different language or, worse, your costume is missing.<\/p>\n<p>That one is an anxiety dream.<\/p>\n<p>I have, in my life, had it in various other incarnations as well.\u00a0 The Director&#8217;s Nightmare\u2014where you are at tech rehearsal and no one\u2014not the actors, not the stage manager, not the designers\u2014will do what you ask.\u00a0 The Playwright&#8217;s Nightmare\u2014where your reading is starting and you realize you forgot to tell your leading lady and there&#8217;s no way she can fly in from the Coast in the next 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, those stress-related imaginings are just that.\u00a0 Imaginings.\u00a0 None of them have ever come true.\u00a0 (Although I have stood on stages and watched fellow actors&#8217; eyes go blank and known something perilously similar to the Actor&#8217;s Nightmare.)<\/p>\n<p>The thing I am wondering about today is why, all of a sudden, I am having these Grand Guignol horror movie-like dreams.\u00a0 For the last couple of days.<\/p>\n<p>Mafia hit men.<\/p>\n<p>Axe murderers.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not like I&#8217;ve been watching horror movies recently.\u00a0 Or even the news.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been spending my time with BBC period pieces.\u00a0 <em>Edward VII.\u00a0 Downton Abbey.\u00a0 Edward &amp; Mrs. Simpson<\/em>.\u00a0 (Just as a side note, imagine my surprise to find Sylvia Buchman&#8217;s (Paul Reiser&#8217;s mother on <em>Mad About You<\/em>) younger days were spent, in part, as Wallis Simpson!)<\/p>\n<p>And when I haven&#8217;t been enjoying tea cups and crown jewels, I have been trekking to the Delta Quadrant with the crew of <em>Voyager<\/em>.\u00a0 (Someday, I will get even with my niece for this whole Netflix thing, but that is a subject for another time.)<\/p>\n<p>So, I haven&#8217;t been basking in terror.\u00a0 And nothing particularly stressful is going on just now that would translate into a fear of getting killed.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just having these horrible dreams.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m not enjoying them, and I&#8217;d like them to stop, please.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And can we make them stop?
